Looking for $$-Saving Ideas from Alaskans

I have a correspondent who would LOVE some help on saving money on her budget. She lives in Alaska and has no access to discount groceries and some of the stores (like Aldi’s) that we have here. I would love for anyone to comment who knows someone living in Alaska who can suggest some money-saving ideas for her. Thanks!

While we don’t have the privilege of shopping discount stores we do have the opportunity to fill our freezers and pantries with all that Alaska has to offer – moose, salmon, berries, etc. And you don’t even have to be a hunter to get moose as some places have road kill programs to distribute moose that are killed on the roadways. :)

As for shopping, though, we do have Sam’s and Costco in Anchorage and Three Bears and Save-U-More in smaller areas where you can buy in bulk. You can also find marked down items at your grocery stores in the scratch & dent section and I always watch the dated items such as dairy because they will be marked down close to the expiration date.

Gardening is another way to help the budget. While some crops do extremely well here (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce) other items require a green house (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers.) All gardens require a fence to keep the moose out, though.

Not sure if this is what you were looking for but I hope it’s helpful.

i am not the greatest at doing so, in fact I usually forget when I go, but I would strongly recommend coupons and generic brands as much as possible. Another thing that may help would be to buy in bulk through places like azur standard (spelling of that blue color is wrong, sorry) or if other major places like costco ship to alaska, you could possibly order with friends and neighbors to combine/divide shipping costs. Another idea would depend upon your growing season-of course a garden! Are there any co-ops or groups of growers in your area? I don’t know your area at all, but also going together on fish wich you can share (I had an aunt who’s husband went fishing regularly and they sent us fresh tuna – amazingLY WONDERFUL)
    hope these ideas help.
